AC: Revelations - Desmond's New Face

Just a heads up: some of the comments below contain story spoilers, read them at your own risk!

I am being a mega nerd fanboy here, but this is annoying me. I've been waiting for Assassin's Creed revelations for aaaaages, and was so excited to finally play it when it unlocked on Steam. But here's the thing: Ubusoft have decided that it's time to replace the main character's face completely. I mean it's nothing like his previous incarnation:

What's up with that? It's a different person?! This kind of developer stuff makes me angry.

Now I'm going to actually complete it before passing further judgement... then maybe I'll write a post about the series. I've been meaning to do that for a while, I made some videos a while back to showcase how awesome the games are but never published them.

Perhaps that wasn't worth a blog post... but whatevs. Fanboi venting was needed.

This reminds me of how annoyed I was at Sucker Punch Productions for using a different voice actor for the main character in the second installment of the inFAMOUS series. I couldn't take the game seriously any more, plus the new voice had a soft touch. Which that in itself doesn't match with someone who causes havoc in a city.

I hated the face change! They overhauled it! Desmond's face, Altair's and Ezio's! I wrote about it on both the Ubisoft and ACR facebook pages and GOT ATTACKED by other fans. They see no difference apparently. I guess they are blind then? I am a huuuuge fangirl when it comes to AC, but this face overhaul ruined the game for me. As Tom had said, I cannot take it seriously any more. It's like I'm playing a bad fan made copy of it. Desmond now looks like he's on crack, Ezio looks like an ape (seriously, have you seen that face?) and Altair looks cross eyed. Why in God's name did they do that?! Everyone keeps saying something about some black room which was used to IMPROVE the characters' faces. Honestly, I don't see that much of a difference. Was it worth changing the protagonists' faces over it? NO. Ubisoft has failed this time. Major fail.

I have to agree, I completely given up on the story of this game becoz I keep skipping the cutscenes to make it feel like it's a real AC game. Gameplay is very good new stuff like with the grenades and tower defence thingys are quite good, but the faces just kill the mood... Desmond has gone from an assassin to an old plumber in 1 scene....

I can understand that them changing Desmond's face may piss you guys off, but come on , are you really stop gonna playing the series just because of his face , we don't even see him much in it anyway, but i'm just glad that it's not gonna stop me from playing it , for i don't mind the way he looks, come on it's not like they made his face look so different that you can't tell it's him.

@Daniel It's not a case of not wanting to play the game anymore for me, nor is it that I can't recognise him anymore entirely. It's the fact that Ubisoft have changed it for no apparent reason - I mean it is definitely very different from the other games.

Ezio's face is also pretty different too. It just seems that they've changed things for the sake of it, and I can't fathom why at all.

@Alan Edwardes I guess you have a point that his face was changed for no reason, but to be honest i though his face just changed to represent that Desmond, Ezio and Altair faces were just forging together because the animus was confused about who he was because his mind really stuffed up, but i guess we all have different opinions.

Probably it's because of ending of the contract with this dude: http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs47/f/200... Who is actually a model for the former Altair/Ezio/Desmond face. In that case, if he doesn't want to make it for more parts of AC, they had no choice. Sorry for my horrible English.

this is my opinion. i loved AC games since playing AC2. This was because it was cool, parkour combined with stealth, beauty, history and music. creating an entire world and including facts which have actually helped me out, in background reading for school etc. The main cool thing was Ezio, the look and how he seemed smart and cocky and unlike geeky generic characters from badly made medival games. the fact that we have warmed towards his features and overall look for 3 games in a row, through desmond, altaiir and ezio, made me like the game even more becaue i had a connection to the character. In some ways many fans are buying this game for this character. So to utterly change it in the final game of a character which we were literally with FROM BIRTH is rediculous. what a fucking stupid descision. It spoilt the game experience because i was having to get used to a new character that had simply donned an assassin hood. Also i strongly beleive had this character looked like that in the first AC the would never of got as popular as they did. The face is nerdy, desmond looks like a prick. Whereas before he looked much more street smart. There is no good reason to change a characters face, in the final stage of its life. argument above about the animus: the previous face was given to all characters moron. AND if it was for the benefit of looking graphically superior, this failed ultimately aswell, ezios face hardly moved when he talked and unrealistic smug lips. in short, i hate the change i really hope to goes back, because ultimately a lead in a game is what holds it together. thanks for reading this, i hope you share my view :)

when I first started playing this bullsh*t EXPANSION PACK... I was really excited to get into it... then I saw Desmond... I realized I was actually looking at Adam Sandler... then it all made sense... he ruins EVERYTHING!!

i agree! it definitely ruins the game, and ok, i get that the animus may have changed it some how, this and that, but at the end when Desmond wakes up, he still looks the same as he did in the animus.. and what about his scar?? >:(

@Mwahaha Actually Francisco Randez was the model for the face, but that is about it. He said so himself that it was cool that his face was being used in a video game but did not really get any other perks from it (apart from it being on the CV). I think the changes were made to make the characters look similar enough to be related (Old Ezio does look different), so the others had to change is my guess at their line of thought.

@Daniel I too do not like the new look of the main characters. I think an understandable scenario to explain what we mean to people who don't understand why we are fussing about faces is the following: imagine watching your favourite sitcom and from one day to the next they swap out the actor of your favourite character for someone completely different.

Not only that, they also hired a different voice actor for Altair and Subject 16, that really annoys me, Revelations is my least favorite AC game. why did they do this to a strong franchise? I loved the "Insane" voice of Subject 16 in AC2 and brotherhood.

I have to agree, the face change really ticked me off especially because the new face looks like a guy you just know has to be a douche in real life.

I can understand if it was a contract thing, but they could have done much better in finding a replacement.

yeah it sucks...I didn't know who I was playing when I first saw ezio. and for desmond, I thought he was literally on crack. took a while of "convincing" myself "it's alright...they've all aged"... whatever, not cool. maybe the original crew didn't want to do it anymore, or wanted more money for a new contract and ubi said "forget it, we'll find anybody else off the street and just slap those names to them".

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks like this. I hate that change. I'm in the middle of the game atm and I don't like it.. I have to admit.. I actually had tears in my eyes when I realized that were actually Desmond and Ezio. For me they look like total strangers.. and I absolutely hate it.

Ok, they faces changed yes... but maybe it was just age? I mean come to think of it, Ezio did complain in one seen that he was tired because of age. Well if while the ancestors get old, Ubi probably wanted to make a little more detailed so they made Desmond older too. It makes sence... Maybe they just wanted to put more detail into the story...... But overall these games were AMAZING! AC3 is going to be a boss.... Just enjoy the game.

Ezio sure did age. Come to think of it.. Altair with 63 looks way younger to me than Ezio with 52. But whatever. Age is a ridiculous reason for Des though! It's not like he stayed in the Animus for 5 years. Well, I don't have much hope but I wish Desmond will look more like him in AC3. I still bet the game's gonna be big and awesome!

Hey, i agree with all the comment above, i think desmond face look badass from assassins creed one to brotherhood, they wrecked it all in revelations altair is face a mess even his voice, ezio did look like an ape, as i am a huge fan on this game, ubisoft have wrecked it, just hope assassins creed 3 will change it for desmond sake. :)

Yeah.. Me 2 got deppressed when saw desmond in black room.Ubi can't blame their age.B'coz i think the first assassin's creed was taken place in september 2012 and they are waiting for 21 december 2012.That means, till revelations everything's goin' on between this period.. And i hope 3 or 4 months won't morph one's face.. Ezio's change can be accepted..

kay so I'm a straight guy and i wanna say that the first Desmond/Altair/Ezio was actually pretty hot. Like he seemed like the guy who would get the chicks. But now he looks like a mother fucking baker. :| like there is a bakery in my hometown and the new face is the exact same as the owner. THATS WHY I CANT TAKE A.C. Revelations SERIOUSLY!!!! He just doesnt have that playboy assassin look anymore. like Desmond wouldn't change. The story would have aged Desmond like what?? 2 years older than in AC 1???? Terrible terrible change Ubisoft.

Wow i thought only me have noticed this difference to be honest I didn't even finished ac revelations yet because of this disgusting change, I mean how they changed the main character face from a series without expecting people to be upset? I hated this change and who says its nothing definitely needs immediate glasses for his tired eyes...

It's stupid how characters like Rebecca's face are almost exactly the same when we only see her for around 10 seconds, but we're stuck with Desmond/Altaïr/Ezio's messed up looks throughout the whole game...

To be honest I am really disappointed with revelations and the series now. I've been playing AC since the first game (which I decided to play again recently as it was included with revelations). Yeah it was repetitive when you had to do the same tasks in a different location but it felt different from other sandbox-type games. Don't get me wrong I loved AC2 but having all these tedious missions in revelations like picking fucking flowers just felt like because ubi got criticised for the original AC they thought it was better to play it safe and adapt gta to the renaissance than to tweak the investigation type format for assassination targets in the first game. The facechange fucked up on the order big time. It sounds lame but it really ruined the experience for me - I could not connect to the characters anymore and to be honest didn't care for them because of it. Characters who I've been playing as for years. Also Altair's voicechange sucked - like I obviously get why people said it seemed out of place in the first game but one of the most important things in any series is consistency. If you're gonna start off with that voice actor finish the goddamned series with them. I also kinda feel brotherhood (although I actually did enjoy playing it) and revelations were unnecessary additions to the series. They didn't expand the story much and just felt like ubi were going for quantity over quality. As much as I think Ezio is awesome I think they should have stuck with their original plan for an AC trilogy and left it to one ancestor per game. Sorry to rant but I just finished revelations today and it pissed me off to hell so I had to vent.

Right, so I played & finished Revelations the weekend it came out last year... I remember feeling the same about it then as I do now. Recently I played through all the AC games again from the beginning because of ACIII. But when I got to Revelations, the reason I only played it once hit me again... & I'm so glad everyone here feels the same. The face changes totally ruined it for me... It's pretty sad of me, but I didn't even finish it this time round. I loved revisiting Desmond, Altaïr & Ezio, they're characters I've come to love over the years. Their faces a familiar part of gaming for me. I actually can't believe they've done it. I don't care about these Animus explanations, they just seem pointless... Why on earth would they do that now?! It's just daft. & Francesco's contract wouldn't run out, he loves the fact they're using his face, he wouldn't demand more money or anything. Like everyone has said, Ezio now looks like an ape, I just can't take him serious at all. & I know it's sad but when you dye his clothes Masyaf White, how they're supposed to be, I feel like he doesn't deserve to wear them hahahahaha, because he's NOT Ezio :(! & Desmond?! I mean WTF?! Why did they remove the scar?! That's the biggest continuity error I've ever seen. I hate it in films when they change actors as well. It's just unnecessary... So again, Revelations, as good as some of the perks are, I just can't take serious, & I'm pretty upset because I wanted to finish them all again before ACIII, but I guess Revs can just go back in the collection. Big fail Ubi, big fail... I hope Desmond looks like Francesco again in ACIII. I'll still be buying it, & I'm sure it'll be amazing. But please bring back the oh so familiar Desmond we've all come to love. Sorry for the essay...

Mia, I cannot agree more with you! All I can think when I'm playing Revelations is "what they do to his face"! And Ezio really looks like an ape! I hope they fix it in AS3.

Altair's voice is actually better in revelations. The voice actor for Altair in AC1 was horrible. He was so wooden and couldn't act, sounded like he was just reading the lines. And he was foreign why would he have an American accent? Ezio didn't so why should Altair? The voice acting for altair in revelations was definitely better. I have to agree with the face change though my first reaction was WTF

your not gonna be happy with Assassins Creed 3 Desmond then. If you thought the change between brotherhood and revelations was bad, Assassins Creed 3 Desmond looks nothing like the past four games at all

Obviously the new face model is a relative of one of the producers because there is no way someone that ugly would be chosen as a model for a video game character. The original Desmond looked Latino, the new one looks Jewish.

I completely agree with Mia...Revelations Ezio looks like a damn ape and Altair...well...no comment. Why the hell did they do it? Even if they made mistakes in the first scan, they should've repeated them, so Desmond can look the same!

I have to say I was SHOCKED when I first saw his face :s, and I was like "WHYYYYYYYYY.." they kept Desmond face for 3 games, he looked pretty smart and handsome with his sharp eyes, and now they ruin everything, even Altair face and voice :(

I just have to say that Altair's voice in ACR was FINE. It made SENSE for him to have an arabic accent since that's what he was. I'm glad they got rid of that terrible out of place American one.
