1&1 Suck Ass

I spent a while playing with my new Amazon CloudFront and S3 storage space, and wanted to point the SimpleStats.net tracker subdomain t.simplestats.net at my CloudFront account to reduce latency etc. So, I ended up asking my shared host A Small Orange software via support to give that subdomain a CNAME record pointing at my CloudFront subdomain. That was spiffy.

I thought that I would probably want to play around with the system and subdomains in the future, without asking A Small Orange. So, I headed over to the 1&1 Control Panel, and gave my main domain an A record pointing to this shared server's URL, and pointed the t.simplestats.net subdomain at my CloudFront space. I checked back an hour or so later, and the domain seemed to be pointing at my shared server at A Small Orange. However, the subdomains that I had re-created using the 1&1 control panel weren't doing anything. At all. I'd created them, pointed them to the CloudFront cname subdomain, and nothing. So, I headed over to the FAQ.

Apparently, 1&Shit take around 24 hours to do something that would be virtually instant using any other domain registrar or DNS management software. I initially thought this time covered propegation time through the DNS, but apparently that's just how long 1&1's servers take to update a simple DNS adjustment.

A day later, the domain is showing this status, but won't let me update the name servers associated with it. Fantastic.
